Moreno Truck & Haul have been operating their business since the mid 1980s. They've delivered goods for nearly every major industry in the nation and for 20 plus years, business was booming as they've traversed the country in all weather for all clients. During the heady times from 2002 to 2007, Moreno was a top rated accounts receivable mastermind of the trucking industry. Few customers were ever late on bills and those clients who were, were sure to turn in their late payments within a reasonable amount of time. Times were great for everyone, and the cash was flowing. But a short year later, in the fall of 2008, when the United States economy took a nosedive and businesses both small and large began to feel the pinch on their pocketbooks, those that used to make their demands had suddenly and largely gone silent. Business slowed down. And worse yet, Moreno had noticed during the early part of 2008 that though the bulk of their clients were always on time with payments, the few late-bloomers there were, had seemingly started to spread this illness. Spring changed to summer, summer changed to fall, and the CEO of Moreno, Julio Lowe, was beginning to feel very uncomfortable indeed whenever he looked at their weekly Accounts Receivable reports. The number of clients who were late in their payments was continuing to grow.He had already been to the administrators to ask what the actual problem was. Were they doing things different, or wrong, when it came to collecting overdue accounts? By his bookkeepers records, this wasn't the case. Perhaps he was losing his customers to his competitor, who seemed to offer very low prices with no guarantee of quality or performance, and these clients who were in debt to his company had possibly disappeared leaving him stranded. Perhaps they were unable to pay their debt to him, but were able to meet the costs of a lesser service. So he did the necessary research and, after discussions with friends in the same field, he realised that no, his customers hadn't gone anywhere else. The had just gone!.The situation looked dire to Julio Lowe. There were goods to ship, employees to pay, trucks to repair and maintain, and continuous overheads that were very extensive when compared to the funds (or lack of) that were incoming. At night he would speak to his wife Stella and shake his head in frustration.

""Lin, I have a really bad feeling,"" he'd sadly say to his wife.""What could you do differently?"" she would ask.Julio would stare off into the distance, and then slowly close his eyes. He could see the fleet of trucks he had purchased over the years. He could see them traveling, bringing goods to all of his clients. But somewhere, a haze would form over his fleet and the vast number of vehicles would disappear to but a few. What could cause this ultimate death spiral of business?""I know what it is,"" Julio said. ""For way too long I've been relying solely on profits received from invoices. For too long I've been allowing our clients to let their accounts become overdue."" All Stella could do was hold his hand and look at him tenderly. 'We know it's a difficult economy at the moment - perhaps it will take a while for people to get on top of their bills'.""Julio knew very well that Stella was only trying to help, but his responsibilities weighed heavily on his shoulders and he knew he had better do something soon to resolve this situation. The next day Julio strolled into his office and was determined to sit down and make every phone call to every client who had owed Moreno money. This wasn't really a very efficient way for a Chief Executive to spend his day, and Julio knew he should be overseeing all the other sides of the business, such as shipments and deliveries, approaching prospective customers, or working with his sales team. But, he felt like he was doing something proactive to help his business, even though he had staff on salary to do just that thing. Wasting money, wasting time - even with the best of intentions, Julio knew that he was in trouble.

After a half day of contacting debtors in vain - they dodged his calls or promised to call back at worst or made minimal interest-only payments at best - he was about to throw in the towel when his secretary Tiffanyerley knocked at his door.

""Can I have a word with you Julio?"" she queried, standing in the doorway.

""Of course Tiffany, please come in."" Julio relaxed back into his chair and looked up at Tiffanyerley.""Well Julio, this afternoon I did some research, trying to work out how we're going to get out of this mess."" She opened up a folder she had been carrying and pulled out a small wad of papers, placing them on the desk in front of him.""Have you ever heard of factoring?"" Tiffanyerley asked.""It does sound vaguely familiar. What is it?"" he said. She began, ""Well, it's really very simple. So basically, factoring invoices would enable us to get paid on the nose for loads that we haul.""Julio interrupted ""Immediately?"".""Immediately, yes"" she added, ""It's actually very simple. We start by having a professional account manager review our figures and help us set up a company profile. That profile will also include investigating our accounts receivable aging reports, our existing customer credit limits and so on. In addition, factoring will assist in determining our customers' creditworthiness, independent from their credit relationship with our company. Its a broad view.I see, Julio said. And then what?Following the completion of their review and once we've been approved for a contract with the factoring company, then we sit down to negotiate conditions and terms. You'll be surprised at the amount of flexibility, all dependent upon the credit histories and business volume.

This company tells us what the cost will be to purchase factoring for our accounts receivable. We come to an agreement and the funding starts pouring out.Julio was still a little concerned. He leaned forward in his chair and studied the paperwork very closely.""It sounds too good to be true, Tiffany,"" he said.""Yes, I know; that's exactly what I thought at the beginning. But really, they have guaranteed us experts that do all the legwork, which would free us up here to focus on our clients in good standing and marketing, all that good stuff. They appear to be very flexible, Julio,"" she underlined a paragraph on the paper before him.""Just how flexible?"" he asked.""It seems that they personalize their factoring charges so that the amount they're prepared to work with is commensurate with our client's debt and our needs. It only takes 2 to 4 days for this to be figured out. """"That sounds pretty good, seeing as we tapped ourselves out with bank loans last year to repair the fleet and money sure is tight. It's imperative that we keep the business rolling as usual, and every day we go unpaid we're getting closer and closer to dealing with some serious issues in both the short term and the long term,"" Julio said.He took a deep breath and looked at his secretary with something she recognized as hope.""Exactly. This could be the answer to our prayers: it will solve many problems we're facing due to these unpaid debts.""Julio took a moment to think about this solution, and agreed with his secretary. The clients who owed them money were long standing friends and professional resources of Moreno. They didn't want to throw away these relationships because they were having trouble paying their bills now. Julio knew only too well that the whole economy was floundering, and that it was not going to change overnight. That unknown amount of time, if he handled these debtors incorrectly, could spell disaster for both of them. Of course he didn't want to lose any more money, but he didn't want to lose business either.""Well, let me think about this tonight Tiffany, thank you."" Tiffany stood up and left Julio's office, with the nice feeling of knowing that she may just have solved a very serious problem.Julio stayed at his desk for a long time, looking over the details they hadn't discussed during their meeting. He wondered if there might be other problems freight factoring could help Moreno Truck & Haul with? Running his pencil down the sheet, he noted that the freight factoring company could assist with fuel costs, fuel advances, and fuel discount cards. In fact, Moreno could receive up to fifty-percent cash advances upon load pick-ups. Julio was a typical business man: he despised binding contracts that didn't allow room to breathe, so he was pleasantly surprised to see that the factoring company didn't require a long term contract, that there was no minimum volume required, and that there were no sign-up fees.""I must tell Morris the good news,"" Julio muttered to himself.Julio's son-in-law, Morris, loved the idea behind Moreno and highly respected his father-in-law for having such great business sense, that two years ago he got his capital together and started his own transportation company. Julio knew then what struggles Morris would face but he encouraged him nonetheless. With the faltering economy, if a big fish like Moreno was hurting, a little guy like Morris was about to catch his death. But, an antidote may have been found in freight factoring and Julio was soon to find out.A few short months later, after completing the application process, having the legal experts review his credit history, accounts receivable, and statements, finally Julio was beginning to find his way out of the hole his debtors had created for him. They adopted reasonable factoring purchase contracts and stopped wasting their own precious time trying to collect debts. They took that time and refocused effort to offering competitive prices in new territories. Julio recalled those dismal months when he wasn't aware of freight factoring, and he shuddered at those memories. If Julio hadn't discovered freight factoring at just the right time, his business may not be operating today.

The Future of a Trucking Company, and Factoring Herbert Hunter let the phone ring on his desk. His morning coffee cooled and his cigarette smoked away in the tray: Herbert is thinking, and pondering the biggest decision he's ever had to make for his trucking business. Hunter Trucking Company was at a turning point of growth and Herbert had to decide if signing with a factoring company was the right way forward.

More than forty years ago Herbert's father had started this business working as an owner-operator and eventually growing Hunter Trucking Company into a fifteen trailer fleet. Yes, they had survived some very difficult times when it appeared like they might go under, and even Herbert's mother had jumped into the cab at times to make hauls. His father had worked long enough to see the price of hires drop dramatically during the recession and to see the explosion of fuel prices afterwards. But now things were different: the company was in Herbert's hands and he needed to ensure that this business would be left in great shape for his sons.

To move Hunter Trucking Company ahead into the future, he needed a steady cash flow but there was just not enough money to go around. His employees needed to be paid. They all have families and the usual household bills. Some of the refrigerated trailers were in need of repairs and he felt to stay competitive it was also a good idea to invest in specialized haulers to be ready for the constant requests he was getting for loads of new energy and agriculture equipment. Every time he had to turn down a request, Hunter Trucking looked weak in a very strong market.

His father would have told him to wait and to take his time adding on new technology. Herbert allowed himself a good hard chuckle. He remembered when his father was totally against installing GPS units in the cabs. His Dad would say ""Why on earth do you need some stranger telling you to get off the exit that everyone knows has been there for years? Also his father had the habit of teasing all the drivers he caught switching into automatic even though driving in automatic was much more efficient though not manly in his fathers eyes. He knew his father's days were long gone and new technology was very important for the business, like having Qualcomm to reduce communication time for bills of lading.

Herbert believed a successful man is always thinking of his next step. How would he take Hunter Trucking to the next level? More importantly, how could he afford it? Business funding was tied up in fuel bills and the mortgage for the garage and office. He just finished paying off the small bank loan for installing satellite radio in the trucks for the guys.

But was factoring the answer? If he was being honest, he didn't really understand how it all worked. It sounded a lot like ninth grade algebra which just didnt feel like it belonged as part of the trucking business. A factoring company actually purchases your invoices and takes control of your accounts receivable, payment being a certain percentage of the amount invoiced. The factoring company gives the trucking business its payment right away which allows the business to have continuous cash flow so it can pay employees, buy fuel, and make repairs for upcoming hauls. Without this assistance, you're placed in the position of waiting for payment from your customers, and this can often be thirty days, or more. In those 30 days, a trucking company cant pay its bills and employees in invoices.

Now it was time for Herbert to do his homework. He had heard of companies charging for same day money transfers, advancing a percentage of the money owed to your business, while the rest is held in a private account if the bill wasn't paid within sixty or more days. Plus it was worse still if the customer didnt pay up at all because then the factoring company would take it right out of the money supposed to be coming to you! Through the grapevine, hed also heard about how some companies suddenly slipped you onto a sliding scale of percentages even if you had already signed a lengthy contract for maybe 3% or 7% so there you are with 10% coming as a cost to you out of the freight bill. His colleague, Ronnie, who owned a trucking company in Missouri, was nearly destroyed by a factoring company who charged him the full freight bill on top of the fees for factoring. He knew he would have to be very careful if he was to avoid any of these shady companies?

But it turned out to be quite easy. When he called the factoring companies he discovered they were very open about their business practices, and very friendly and helpful. Their customer service actually knew things about their company and spoke in nice clear English so he could understand what was being explained. He was quite happy to sign an exclusive contract. He liked the idea of a long term commitment so he knew he wouldnt have to bother going back and forth to different companies and wasting time filing more forms. Nobody charged him for credit checks and they offered him a fuel advance on the pick-up of the load. Many companies offered a non-recourse factoring program that suited him just fine. He was more than happy with the figures he was offered in percentage terms on the freight bills. It was good money.

For Herbert it was quite a relief to be dealing with the factoring company. They were more personable than those loan managers at the bank. It seemed as though those bank people spoke another language, but these factoring guys knew the trucking business and spoke to him like a client, not like a beggar for a handout. The factoring companies didnt worry over his credit and the debt troubles his father had had in the past of the company. Factoring was based on the credit of his customers and on their reliability which worked well for Herbert because he and his father had built up good strong relationships over decades with their list of clients. He knew immediately that there would not be any problems when they were contacted by the factoring company regarding their invoices. His clients wouldn't have any problems, nor would they think poorly of Hunter Trucking, because the factoring companies handle themselves in such a polite and professional manner, similar to the way his father had managed the business in the past.

Feeling happier now, Herbert stepped out of his office to advise his secretary to expect to receive the contract very shortly from the factoring company. There was a new bounce is his step now: he knew instinctively that this new step would raise the future of his company to a new and higher level, and that all the stress from the past could now be put behind him. He suddenly realized that, with this new cash flow, he could actually expand Hunter Trucking Company and who knows, move into Canada, which had always been his dream. He was a happy man again knowing that he had just made a decision which would guarantee the success of his business and his sons wouldn't be inheriting a financial mess.

Trucking Factoring  Articles

So, this is not a loan? James Carpenter asked as he leaned back in his chair, crossing his legs. The woman who sat across the desk smiled and shook her head. No, not exactly, she stated.James Carpenter owned a small trucking company, and his business had recently fallen on difficult times. Trucking could be a profitable business, and for a little under a decade, it had been for Jamie. He named his business Long Trucking, named after Nelson and Alberto, his two grandfathers. They had both been hardworking men, and had done a lot to make James the same.Six months ago disaster struck Jamie's business when two out of his fleet of fifteen trucks were taken off the road.

One was involved in a very costly accident, and the other simply rolled over, and headed to the trucking graveyard. The financial security of Jamie's company relied on his full fleet on fifteen being on the road, and missing two trucks was just devastating . In addition, he just didn't have the available cash to buy a new truck, plus repair the other one.A big problem a lot of trucking companies came across was how bills were paid in the industry. You could go a month or more before bills were completely paid off. In the long run, this wasnt an issue, but if problems arose, you could find yourself in trouble.James was an excellent business man, and he certainly hadn't done anything wrong. Certain events had occurred that he couldn't possibly have predicted, and now he had to find a way to protect his business and prevent it from ultimate devastation. And that's why he found himself across the desk from this woman. Her name was Shannon and she worked for a factoring company. He had accidentally come across her company one night when he was working late, searching the internet to see if there was some solution to his financial dilemma.Shannon explained. it is really not a loan at all: we actually buy your accounts receivable. We're not giving you finance to be repaid later: we're purchasing something from you, and when you can you can buy it back. This is a win-win situation: we're protected from a total loss, and you're protected from the ridiculous fees and charges you'd have to pay if you borrowed from a bank.James nodded. It sounded perfect - perhaps too good?.The woman laughed. You look like you dont believe me, she said.Oh no, I do: it just sounds too good to be true. I thought I was going to lose my company.Shannon smiled, agreeing. Yes, we get a lot of that. There's no way we want to see you lose your business. We know how hard you work, and that you've invested everything in your business. Sometimes you need help. That's why we do what we do.Well, I'm very grateful that you came to see me today. Its right down the road, usually we do it all online, but I didnt mind swinging on by today, Shannon said with a smile. Let's work out a solution to your problem. And right there and then they created a business profile. James completed the form, with Shannon offering advice as needed.

The completed profile gave Shannon and her company all the information they needed on Jamie's business, and with this information they would determine if this business would in fact be suitable for Factoring. In truth, not all companies were. Some businesses are beyond the help of a Factoring company, while other businesses weren't in enough financial stress to warrant it. As James completed his form, Shannon listened to his story and she felt quite sure he would be the ideal candidate for Factoring. When the form was done Shannon took it and slid it into her briefcase. Standing up, she reached over the desk and shook Jamie's hand. He stood before they shook as well, and then smiled. They said their goodbyes and James walked her to the door, and then returned to his office. His employees were there, seven who worked in the office, and as he sat behind his desk once more he heard the familiar clack of fingers on keyboards, the electronic whine of the copy machine. He shut his eyes. He had felt so helpless lately, was sure the whole thing was collapsing, and would take him with it. But now, after speaking to Shannon and learning all about Factoring, he felt such a huge relief, like someone had just lifted a huge weight off his shoulders. He sat back in his chair and ran a hand through his graying but still thick black hair. All those long, sleepless nights. The sudden panic attacks, not matter where he was. Already he could feel all the stress start to drain away. He knew it wasn't over yet and that there was still a way to go, but he could just feel everything start to change for him. He was there, he was on the right path, and he was working to make things right.James couldnt help but think back to when he had first started the business. At twenty-two and straight out of school he had opened a restaurant. It had been really successful. Home cooking in his hometown, and he had done very well. But he had gotten bored. He wasn't passionate about the food industry. He thought long and hard, and then he decided to sell the restaurant. He took half a year off, and in that time he thought to start Long Trucking. And that's exactly what he did. Once again he built a company from the ground up. The business had been an instant success. Then disaster! The two trucks went down and suddenly his success wasn't looking so guaranteed. He was about to turn fifty. He didnt think he had it in him, to save this company. But giving up wasn't part of his personality either.

The idea of cutting his losses, shutting down, laying off his workers, it actually made him sick some nights. He didnt know how to say quit. And now it seemed as though he wouldn't have to - all because of Factoring. James opened his eyes, sat forward, turned his computer on. He had lots to do. He could be thankful later, for now, it was time to work.

This implies that a trucking company can pay out the salaries of the work force, keep all the vehicles loaded with gas and continue to surmount, rise and expand without continually waiting for the finances which is taking too lengthy to come in. Trucking Companies operating without a factoring program applied are leaving themselves at critical hazard, as rivals cash out fast and proceed to expand.

There's absolutely almost nothing to be troubled about when it comes to working with a Factoring establishment-- they typically aren't like a financial institution or any individual who is going to leave you with a substantial mound of financial obligation to pay back. You give them authentic invoices from job you have already finished , you are simply hastening the payment system.

In the United states of America, where truck establishments survive, factoring establishments are not considered taking on loan in any capacity. This private settlement then enables both parties to profit and take pleasure in a convenient future-- it gives the factoring firm a guaranteed resource of revenue to put into the list and it gives the trucking company the needed finances that they sweated to get.

The trucking company provides their accounts to the factoring enterprise. The trucking factoring provider then obtain the payments from the trucking company's customers. Factoring has been all around for hundreds of years and has been used for long times by several various fields-- but none more so than truckers. While you might possibly lose out on a small part of the money, something like 1-3 % depending on who you deal with, it means that you are getting the cash today and can actually start putting the cash to do work.

After all, an IOU or an invoice is not actually going to cover overheads, is it? For trucking companies when the hard earned cash can be great one day and gone the next, it's up to the drivers to work sensibly and to guarantee they are leaving themselves with a considerable volume of time and money to get through the week up until they are compensated again.

So the next instance your trucking company is enduring some temporary capital troubles and you are spending a lot of time chasing slowly paying clienteles, why not start thinking of utilizing a factoring businesses as a way to get your money and give yourself a more convenient future in the eyes of your trucking workers and your bank dividend?

Bank Loans

Bank loans are an extremely traditional way for a business to get financing. While these loans are handy they are not available to every business. For example, a fairly newly established business simply may not have the assets to readily get a loan from a bank, even if they do, the standard collateral for a business loan is the business itself, which means that if you cannot make your loan payment, you risk losing your entire business. In addition, while you apply for a certain loan amount, that is all the financing you are entitled to. Of course, once that loan has been re-paid, you can always re-apply for another loan.

What Are Trucking Factoring Companies?

Trucking Factoring companies do not give loans, and the money you get from the Trucking Factoring company does not put you in debt. The finance you receive from the Trucking Factoring company is determined by money already earned by your business, but not yet received. The Trucking Factoring company purchases your accounts receivable, or part of them, for a certain percentage of their value - this is normally about 80-95%. The amount of money you can receive is based on the amount of money you have earned and the accounts receivable you are willing to sell. Once you have set up Trucking Factoring account it continues as long as you wish it too and the amount of money available to you even can grow as your business grows, giving you the ready cash you need to meet your own obligations.

Benefits of a Trucking Factoring Company Vs. A Bank Loan

While not every business can take advantage of Trucking Factoring account financing (you have to have a business that has account receivables) for those that can use this type of financing there are several distinct benefits.

1. There is no debt. You don't incur debt as you do with a bank loan because the Trucking Factoring company actually purchases your accounts receivable. One of the main benefits of this kind of financing is that your business credit rating and your personal credit rating won't be affected. In the event that your business fails, you wouldn't have to be concerned about someone coming after your personal or your business assets in order to pay off a loan. With a bank loan, the debt goes onto your credit report, and even one late payment can adversely affect your businesses credit, and even the ability to get insurance and may even reflect upon your personal credit rating.

2. No Collateral Required. Another benefit of using a Trucking Factoring company instead of a traditional loan is that you aren't required to provide collateral to the Trucking Factoring company in order to secure financing, because the company buys the accounts receivables; not loans you money based on them. Plus, the state of your credit rating is not an issue; however the Trucking Factoring company will run a credit check on your clients whose accounts receivable are being offered for financing. This means that it's easier for new businesses to access the finance they need through a Trucking Factoring company, providing their accounts receivable are in good order. A bank may believe you haven't been in business long enough to be able to cover this risk.

3. Receive Your Money Faster. With a Trucking Factoring company you can actually get the money you need faster. The money will normally be in your account within 24 hours, once the Trucking Factoring company is confident that your customers accounts are likely to be paid. With a bank, there are vast amounts of paperwork, then the loan has to be underwritten, which can take months before you actually see the loan if it is approved.

4.Interest is Paid Up Front. With a bank loan interest continues to build, and this has to be paid the whole time you have a business loan; however with a Trucking Factoring company there is no interest - they take it right off the top by deducting it from the total amount of receivable accounts. So not only are you relieved of those monthly loan payments, but you also don't have to worry about the building up of interest, as every penny in the account is yours to spend on the business.

As you can see, there are several benefits that makes considering financing through a Trucking Factoring company over a traditional bank worthwhile. However, there are also a couple of other benefits that a factory company can offer your business is far beyond the scope of the bank. The most important benefits is that once you sell your accounts receivable to the factory company, you don't have to take time away from running your business to collect the money owed from reluctant to pay customers. The Trucking Factoring company takes over that chore, since it is now their money to collect. Trucking Factoring companies are very good at collecting these debts, saving you the time and effort that you need to devote to your growing company.

In addition, since the Trucking Factoring company evaluates the credit quality of your customers prior to purchasing the accounts receivable you gain valuable information into which customers are likely to pay and which ones are not so likely to pay. While a Trucking Factoring company is not the only way for your business to obtain the money it needs to keep growing, it does offer a type of financing well worth considering.
